Snakes control in San Antonio & the Hill Country

Rat snakes, coachwhips, and garter snakes turn up in San Antonio yards chasing rodents and hiding in cover. Two deserve respect: the western diamondback and the Texas coral snake. Most calls are really about what brought the snake to the house.

02 · Signs

What will you notice?

  • Shed skins along the foundation, in the garage, or under a shed
  • Rodent droppings that suddenly stop showing up
  • Live sightings at the fence line, woodpile, or AC pad at dusk
  • A dry buzz or rattle coming from brush when you walk close
  • Small openings at the soil line under skirting or a slab edge

03 · Risk

Risk to home and health

  • A western diamondback bite is a medical emergency
  • Coral snake bites are rare but need hospital care
  • Dogs and horses bitten while sniffing brush piles
  • Kids reaching into woodpiles, rock walls, or hollow logs
  • A snake in the attic usually means rodents are living above you
  • Killing a harmless snake is regulated and removes free rodent control

04 · What to do

What do I do about snakes?

Do this now
  1. 01Keep people and pets back. Most bites happen when someone tries to kill or move a snake.
  2. 02Photo it from several feet away. That tells us rattlesnake, coral snake, or rat snake.
  3. 03Close the door to the room and block the gap under it. Most snakes leave on their own.
  4. 04Rake up leaf litter, pull mulch and firewood back from the foundation, and cut tall grass.
  5. 05Skip mothballs, sulfur, and repellent spikes. They do not reliably keep snakes out.
  6. 06Do not reach into a woodpile, crawl space, or wall void without looking first.
Call us when
  • You find shed skins in the attic, garage, or under the house.
  • A rattlesnake or coral snake is near a door, play area, or dog run.
  • You cannot tell a venomous snake from a harmless one.
  • Someone is bitten. Call 911, keep them still, and let the wound rest below heart level.
Robert's field note · Snakes
“The rat snake in your garage is eating roof rats, and nobody needs it killed. The calls I take seriously are a diamondback by the dog run and shed skins in the attic. Both come back to the same two fixes: seal the gaps and take away the cover. Mothballs and repellent stakes do nothing but move the snake onto the neighbor's slab. Do the exclusion once and the yard stops being a highway.”

How should we reach you?

06 · Questions

What people ask us.

Do snakes in the yard mean I have rats?+

Usually, yes. Rat snakes and coachwhips follow rodent prey. Cut the rodents and the reason to visit goes away.

Will a snake come into my house?+

They come in through an opening with food on the other side: weep holes, garage gaps, unscreened vents, crawl space entries. Sealing those is the fix.

Do snake repellents work?+

Not reliably. Mothballs, sulfur, and repellent stakes have no consistent evidence behind them. Exclusion and removing cover do.

When are snakes most active in San Antonio?+

Spring and fall days, and nights through the summer heat. After rain and on warm nights is when most people see them.

What do I do if I find a rattlesnake in the yard?+

Give it space, keep dogs and kids away, and call us. Removal and transport are regulated in Texas, so the work we do is exclusion so it does not come back.

Are the snakes here venomous?+

Two matter: the western diamondback and the Texas coral snake. Most snakes people see around San Antonio are harmless rat snakes, coachwhips, and garter snakes.
